When it comes to ancillary benefits billing, there are options. Life, disability, and worksite plans are calculated on a self-bill, or a file feed sent to the carrier who produces a list bill. Either way, the premium is derived from enrollment records, and those records live in a BenAdmin platform.
State-required PFML, TDI, and DBL programs come with no such options. The premium calculation lands fully back on the employer’s desk, and even employers who list bill every other line of coverage still have this gap. Self Bill Pro is now introducing statutory leave and disability plan billing to help close it.
Every other ancillary line is billed from enrollment. Whether the bill is created by Self Bill Pro, the carrier, or the group itself, the enrollment record tells you who is covered, under what tier or volume, and at what rate. That alone is enough to produce an invoice.
In contrast, statutory premium is calculated from pay. The premium owed for an employee is a function of what that employee was actually paid in the applicable period, run against the rate and wage cap that apply to that plan.
Carriers do not have pay data today as their EDI files are not built to deliver it. That is why a statutory plan cannot be list billed, no matter how many other lines sit on the same bill.
It is also, candidly, why we did not build these into our self-bills sooner. A self-bill is only as good as the data behind it, and the data behind every other line we calculate comes from the BenAdmin platform. In order to create a statutory invoice, we must have payroll data.
The gap closes the moment the calculation is built on real pay data from the system that produced it.
Self Bill Pro connects directly to your payroll platform through a simple API. It is a one-time authorization, not a file feed to build and maintain, and not a monthly export for someone on your team to assemble. Once connected, wages flow to us from the source system, by employee, by pay period, by state.
That single connection is what makes an accurate statutory invoice possible.
With payroll connected, we take on the parts of the process that are hardest for any employer to maintain:
Our premium calculation is built on wage data alone, and nothing we see in the deduction register changes that number. Deduction auditing is a separate exercise: we tell you where payroll is deducting something different from what the plan’s rules produce, so you can decide what to do about it.
Calculating the premium and getting the bill paid shouldn’t be the part that consumes your time. Self Bill Pro has done the work to connect to the data, manage the state and carrier requirements behind your plan, and produce one bill per state on the cadence each one requires.
If you are administering private PFML, TDI, or DBL plans today, or evaluating them for the upcoming plan year, Self Bill Pro is ready to put your mind at ease with consistent, compliant and accurate statutory invoices.
